Wellness for a long time has erroneously been viewed as freedom from disease. A lot of people assumed and still do that if there is no sign of disease then they are living in optimal wellbeing.
Thankfully, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has come to save the day and many lives in the process; by properly giving us the definition of Wellness as
“a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.
In other words, even though having no illness or disease is an aspect of being healthy; it should not be taken as a confirmation of optimal well being.
The National Wellness Institute also defines it as
“a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential”.
Meaning it is an intentional and deliberate approach to living and sustaining optimal wellbeing.
Wellness does not just happen to us. It does not fall from heaven as manna. It takes work and commitment to be able to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
So, what does it entail then, if not just about nutrition or exercise? Well, there are 8 aspects that contribute to claims of wholesome wellness and these are;
- Emotional Wellness: understanding feelings and coping effectively with stress
- Environmental Wellness: living a lifestyle that is respectful of our surroundings and taking action to protect the earth
- Financial Wellness: successfully managing financial expenses to combat financial failure that leads to stress, anxiety and fear which impacts health and even academic excellence.
- Intellectual Wellness: constantly expanding one’s realm of knowledge and encountering new ideas with an open mind
- Spiritual Wellness: developing a set of values that help you seek meaning and purpose either through religion or relaxation
- Physical Wellness: maintaining a healthy body and seeking appropriate care when needed.
- Social Wellness: performing social roles effectively and comfortably, while creating a network of meaningful and productive relationships.
- Occupational Wellness: enjoying occupational choices and appreciating contributions
In essence, Wellness is a proactive, preventive approach designed to achieve optimum levels of health, social and emotional functioning. It can also be defined as an active process through which you become aware of and make choices toward a more successful existence.
In conversations surrounding optimal well-being, children are more or less often left on the last rung of the ladder. Yes, we might talk about their nutritional and academic needs…but have we thought about the choices we make as adults and how they influence the lives of our children when they become adults? We get so busy trying to make life choices that make us happy without considering the effects on the children.
Children are very vulnerable because choices are made for them. We each have a responsibility to be adequately equipped with knowledge and skills to make life easier and better for children. At WellBaby, we believe every adult is a parent as long as there is a child in your vicinity, irrespective of whether you have children or not.
Which is why WellBaby has come up with a series of annual events tagged “The WellBaby Wellness Train”…tailored to change the Wellness narrative not just in Nigeria, but in Africa.
Via these events we get to visit different “cities” in the vast world of wellness and highlight issues and challenges while coming up with solutions that will help foster healthy lifestyles that will ultimately impact positively on children.
These events will be fully packed with great cerebral and engaging discussions, fun filled and learning activities, shopping experiences and networking opportunities. The maiden edition kicks off in Lagos, Nigeria on the 25th November 2017 with “Lessons in Childhood Obesity” as our destination of choice.
The World Health Organisation has pronounced that Childhood Obesity is a global problem;
Globally, 42 million preschool children were overweight in 2015. Making childhood obesity one of the most serious public challenges in the 21st century.
Expected to be in attendance are representatives from the government, relevant state and federal agencies, World Health Organization and other relevant stakeholders in the Health and Wellness industry.
Our “Tour Guides” are an eclectic mix of specific and trained professionals. This event is open to anyone who is passionate about a healthy lifestyle, unsure about how to go about it or has goods and services that tailor to the needs of a health seeking society. It is a full day and highly participatory event.
With “#TWWT”, WellBaby is proud to announce that it is indeed setting the pace and taking several notches up the ladder in enlightening the society about how best to be healthy and bring up healthy children. Join us and don’t be left out of this train ride.
You can determine the level of your participation; as a Sponsor, a Partner, a Wellness Vendor or a Tourist. And it is quite easy to do so.
